Brittany Pohākea Yap Scholarship Fund

Brittney Pohakea ScholarshipThe Brittany Pohākea Yap Scholarship Fund is an annual scholarship that will award one or two Native Hawaiian students up to $2,000 per year to be used toward their tuition. Preference will be given to students with a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 and majoring in Education, Communication, English, Journalism, or Humanities.

Yap was born and raised on Maui and is a Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama graduate. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 2006 and Master of Arts degree in Communication in 2008 from Hawai‘i Pacific University.

“If it wasn’t for scholarships, it would have been very difficult for me to receive a bachelor’s and master’s degree. College tuition is not cheap, and with today’s economic times a lot of people are choosing to save money and sometimes giving up their dream of going to college. I’ve always wanted to pay it forward, in hopes that one day those that I helped will do the same,” said Yap.

Aside from being an alumna, Yap has also worked at Hawai‘i Pacific University as the assistant director of University Relations and as a journalism instructor.

“I know how it is to be a struggling college student. With this fund I hope to lessen the financial burden on the scholarship recipients so they can focus their time and energy on their studies and recognize their full potential,” said Yap.

Students interested in applying for the scholarship can email, call the HPU Scholarships Office at (808) 566-2430, or visit the HPU Website for more information.

Deadline to apply was April 5, 2013. (Next year’s deadline will most likely be around the same time during the spring.)

*Please do not contact Britt Yap about information regarding how to apply. Hawai‘i Pacific University is responsible for selecting recipients and handling all questions from students regarding the status of their application.
